Christmas is just around the corner. We are wrapping our last gifts, shipping out the last orders and writing our last Christmas Cards, before the big day.
Thanks to our wonderful grünBAG Nissemand, our presents are prepared, cookies are baked and all we have to do is make our way to our loved ones and cosy up for the holidays.
We Reflect on This Year with Joy and Gratitude.
grünBAG started from the wish to create an eco-friendly and ethical alternative to a fast fashion concept. Helen, the designer and founder of grünBAG, believed in the notion that change starts with oneself. She took it upon herself to be part of the change she wanted to see and founded a company built on the wish to inspire positive environmental change.
Today, our team of 6 works hard on realising Helen’s mission by reusing waste materials and transforming them into durable sustainable bags.
At grünBAG, we consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to work together in an open space and couldn’t be more grateful for the “grünBAG fam” that has formed over the years.
To our Inspiring Influencer Friends
We have also connected with some incredible people this year. We collaborated with inspiring bloggers like Immy from Sustainably Vegan and Alden from Ecocult, our wonderful bloggers from the Ethical Writers Coalition and many more. Seeing all of their content and their honest reviews, we consider ourselves fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with many more in the future.
Our Biggest Thank You Goes to…
Our biggest thank you, however, goes to you, our customers. We get so excited every time you tag us in one of your grünBAG pictures. The feeling of knowing that people around the globe connect and support what we do is our biggest motivation.
We listen when you talk and value your input. Your engagement is what continues to inspire us to be better and do better. And for that, we thank you!
We are looking forward to many more years with you all. We cannot wait to come back in the new year with new ideas, ready to take on whatever may come.
Merry Christmas and lots of love from
Your grünBAG team
Still looking for the perfect gift for your loved ones?
Well, since our Danish Nissemand came early this year and gave us quite a lot of great ideas, we have decided to share 3 tips for great and sustainable last-minute gifts with you.
1. Give experiences
In our eyes, there is nothing more wonderful than connecting with others.
Giving the gift of quality time is not only a great last-minute gift, but it is also a great way to catch up and unwind after the busy holiday season. Be it a visit to the museum, tickets to the theatre or a day of ice bathing and sauna afterwards, we can’t think of a better gift to receive this Christmas.
Our office is known to be the place you will always find chocolate in. Especially during the busy holiday season, nothing is more appreciated than a box of freshly baked Christmas cookies, a bottle of local glogg or a basket of fresh clementines. Don’t underestimate the power of a great food gift. It is always appreciated and a fantastic choice for a last minute visit.
3. Gift Cards
We truly believe in giving gifts that create value. In our opinion, the purpose of presents is to give something that people will love and care for. Especially for our Zero Waste friends, grünBAG provides virtual gift cards for our online store where people can pick and choose what they want. We ship our product in biodegradable packaging with a recycled plastic sleeve for the address and bill. Giving a gift card is a great last minute gift, especially for those friends don’t know their exact preferences of.
What are your last minute go-to’s? Connect with us on Instagram and let us know.
Christmas is fast approaching and so is the abundance of Christmas decoration options available to us.
Inspired by our founder Helen, who comes up with a new creative way to build an eco-friendly Christmas tree out of upcycled material every year, we found 3 different ways to greenify this year Christmas decorations.
1. Edible Christmas Decorations
Gingerbreadmen might just be our favorite way to decorate our tree. Simply use a gingerbread recipe of your choice and get creative. We love the endless options when it comes to shapes and gives the tree a personal touch. Perfect for a cosy family Sunday.
2. Second-Hand for the win
At grünBAG, we are a big fan of upcycling (Duh ;-)).
At the office, all of our Christmas decoration is upcycled from things we already had. This year, our redesigner Christina made stunning stars out of the leftover scraps from our grünBAG Backpacks.
We also use leftover paper from order to create beautiful Christmas ornaments and window stars. This option is affordable, fun and really gets us into the Christmas spirit.
3. Buy consciously
There is nothing wrong with not having the time to DIY. Believe us, we know the challenge of prioritising around the holidays oh too well. In that case, Christmas markets are our best bet. Go for local, handmade and look for materials like wood, stainless steel, glas and paper. They will last you for more than one season and save you money in the long run.
We would love to see your sustainable Christmas decorations, tag us in your Instagram post, we will share our favorits in our Instagram stories!
Black Friday is coming up and this year, we aim to highlight the quality of our products.
Black Friday is often used to increase sales and offer customers the opportunity to buy more at a lower price.
While we don’t want to judge what Black Friday means to other companies, this model doesn’t align with grünBAG’s mission to promote the circular business model. Our ideal customers only purchase our products once. They use them, care for them and pass them on when they have no more need for them. We believe that products need to be made to last for years, if not a lifetime, in order to eliminate the need for a day like Black Friday.
Therefore, instead of using Black Friday to sell more products, we are dedicated to promoting conscious consumerism by highlighting the concept of a circular economy. Our products are sturdy and long-lasting, which makes them perfect for the circular market. Even a second-, third- and 4th- hand grünBAG keeps its value, shape and colour and we are prepared to prove it!
So without further ado, we introduce Pay it Forward Friday, where we give away one Alden Backpack for one year. After that year, we will pick another winner and send a packaging label to the current owner who will then pass the backpack on the new winner. Our goal is to follow this tradition for the next 10 years to show that great quality is a long-term investment.
grünBAG takes care of all the shipping costs and is happy to make adjustments and reparations along the way in order to create the best experience for the one-year owner of this Alden Backpack.
To enter the giveaway, simply follow these 2 steps:
- Follow grünBAG on Instagram
- Subscribe to the grünBAG newsletter
Attention! The new backpack for adventurers is finally here: The “Alden” BackPack!
The Story Behind the Alden BackPack
This sustainable backpack was developed in collaboration with well-known American journalist and founder of EcoCult.com, Alden Wicker. Alden and her husband are currently traveling the world, and she was in need of a backpack that is stylish enough for the city, but practical enough for hiking and rainy weather. So grünBAG developed a backpack that meets the needs of long-time travellers and digital nomads: spacious, durable, water resistant, and Instagram-able. It fully retains its shape, does not collapse, and does not require a rain cover in case of monsoon.
The Alden BackPack has more practical pockets than any other grünBAG before. There are two pockets on each side for your water bottle and either your reusable coffee mug, a camera lens, camping utensils, or whatever else you need at hand. A zippered pocket on the front of the bag is hidden underneath the fold-down flap, to hide your mobile phone, wallet, or other valuables from pickpocketers. Inside, you’ll find a lined computer pocket for a 13″ laptop, plus two small pockets, and a large A4 pocket for magazines or notepads. This backpack has a shockingly slim profile even when stuffed to the brim!
As a last special detail, our Alden BackPack is hand sewn in our studio in Aarhus, Denmark from 90% recycled Danish materials. If you’re looking for something sustainable, zero waste, or vegan, our Alden BackPack ticks all the boxes. You’ll find Alden Wickers post about grünBAG here.

“Alden” BackPack – the eco-friendly travel backpack
The backpack consists of leftover material from tarpaulin production in Denmark. We collect the material that is cut off for producing truck covers and party tents: never used, but nevertheless would otherwise be put in the landfill. The material is durable and does not lose much colour or shape, and it is exactly this strong material that you can find in the majority of our grünBAG bags and the Alden BackPack.
The fabric of the shoulder straps is made of recycled plastic and is lined with a soft fabric made of large thermal suits, which we get from Viking Lifesaving Equipment. The same thermal material is used to line the internal computer bag. The other inside pockets are made from mesh banners, which were used as advertising banners in Denmark.
A versatile backpack
Although the backpack was designed with the inspiration and perspective of a traveller, it has many other uses. For instance, we already have demand from students looking for a school/uni bag. Are you the adventurer or rather need a backpack for hiking, cycling or sailing or do you need an everyday pannier that keeps your computer safe and secure? Our grünBAG “Alden” BackPack covers these needs without a shrug.
Get your new Alden BackPack in our online shop today, we will shortly distribute our newest treasure amongst our vendor’s stores around Denmark.
Have you ever considered what working in a small sustainable company would be like? 6 months ago Florine startet to work with us at grünBAG. Florine is the most smiling and likable German person you can imagine and besides translating our entire website into German she also coordinates our collaboration with international influencers to spread the knowledge of all our eco friendly bags. Florine is no less than a wonder woman and besides being a student in Denmark and a grünBAG employee she also runs her own blog, The Wasted Blog, where she explores and describes a zero waste lifestyle. In her latest blogpost she focused on the topic “Working in a small sustainable design company”
Florine writes: “The company is structured in a tight-knit yet highly productive manner. While I am in the marketing department led by Sille, an absolute powerhouse and natural badass, the heart and soul really are the “redesigners” Anne and Christina, led by the founder of the company, Helen Leegard. With Jens Peter overlooking the andministrative chores, that would sum up all employees at grünBAG”
Helen, Jens Peter, Christina, Anne, Florine and Sille are covering all necessary fields of work from design, production, marketing, e-commerce, finance and sales, all of which take place in our creative hub i Aarhus, Denmark. One large bright room where the industrial machine is never silent and where the hands behind the keys to this post also take part in the design and production processes when needed. The distance between having a brilliant idea to putting it into action is never far. That and the fact that everyone has a close knowledge of all areas of work, is probably the particular characteristic of working in a small business.
Our focus on creating sustainable and eco friendly bags means really high quality of all our bags. Our bags must be durable for everyday use in many years. Therefore we always choose the strongest materials and we test all our models before putting them on our webshop. Should you, as a customer, experience that a strap or a sewing wears out, we also offer to repair the bag to extend the life of the bag. Working for a greener future with less waste makes sense to and motivates all of us at grünBAG.
We really love to improve og renew our bags and designs. And most of all we love it when we can add more “new” reused materials to our bags. And that is just what we have done with this version of our popular grünBAG BackPack. You have the same spacious og waterproof design and the same inside pockets that easily keep both your computer, your wallet and keys safe. From our cooperation with VIKING Life-Saving Equipment we have a lot of black, durable lifelines that are now added to the backpack as closing straps. The black lifeline is closed with a cool looking buckle from the Danish military.
We always keep our vision of a greener future with less waste og more reuse in sight. Therefore it is always a great pleasure to implement “new” materials that is wasted elsewhere. In that way we give it a new life and we love it.
